My desk is covered under a pile of rubbish. Some of it, literally, rubbish. I’ve always been messy (spent a lot of time sitting in my messy room instead of actually cleaning it as a petulant teenager) and in my grown-up relationship we’ve agreed my mess can stay in my corner. Ok fine, corners*. But sometimes it gets out of control. And the complete lack of control in my external space can make me feel out of control within, and in my business. Ergo, this post. I read a great article about what to do when you’re feeling shitty about your… Continue reading »
Just Let Go. And Go the Bleep to Sleep!
I’ve always been guilty of burning the candle at both ends. I get up early to do something fun, like horse ride, walk and talk with a friend, write morning pages, cook food for the day ahead, sit down at the table with hubster and eat an omlette*… Then I work hard all day (though admittedly harder on some days than others). Then in a never-ending bid to prevent life feeling like a continual cycle of up, work, home, eat, sleep, to get up and do it all again**, I’m always out in the evenings talking, eating and drinking with friends, chasing down the latest exciting event… Continue reading »
Monday Meals – Baked Trout Salad
This is a super simple salad that you can make in bulk and have for lunch and dinner over a few days. You know me – all about batch cooking. I made this for lunch on a Friday, then had it for dinner the next night. Plus the hubster got in on the action, so you can make a few portions at once. Take this: 500g fresh trout (salmon would work well here, too) 1 tbs olive oil 350g green beans, topped, tailed, sliced lengthways and steamed 2 lebanese cucumbers, cut into sticks 4 stalks celery, sliced on the diagonal… Continue reading »
The Happy Eater’s Facelift
Normally, I don’t really agree with cosmetic surgery, but I decided The Happy Eater needed a bit of a revamp, so we’ve had an overhaul. I begged the very talented Evie the Elephant to design a logo and colour scheme for me, and then Piglet Designs update the site for us*, and we think it’s looking slick! Come on over and check out the new site – new logo, new colours…new excitement!! I’d love to hear what you think! We’re also working on a super-dooper-extra-special freebie for all our subscribers so watch this space and we’ll send it out to… Continue reading »
How Choosing Happiness Will Help You Lose Weight
Do you ever eat to comfort yourself? I’ve been down in the dumps lately. I read a magazine (and we all know everything in them is true) that had a little ante-natal depression quiz and I ticked every one of the indicators (withdrawing from family and friends, difficulty sleeping, extreme irritability, feeling like a failure, feeling guilty…). And also a desire to overeat and weight gain that’s unrelated to the pregnancy. But these signals relate to anyone who’s out of whack, unhappy and not looking after themselves. So it got me thinking. Often when I’ve got the blues I try… Continue reading »
Monday Meals – A Green, Clean Smoothie Machine
Last week we went on a clean eating challenge, and I slept better than I have in ages! I drink green smoothies most days as they make me feel fresh and healthy, and also like a bit of cheating later in the day won’t be the end of the world. But I hate washing up, and I don’t like spending too much time in the kitchen – I’m all about fast, functional cooking that creates a little party in my mouth! So I batch cook pretty much everything. That includes green smoothies. I don’t measure amounts, I just chuck in… Continue reading »
How 5 Minutes of Sun Can Prevent the Afternoon Munchies
Daylights savings has just ended in Sydney, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder*. Are you starting to feel trapped in your office ‘open plan space’? Are the darker evenings getting you down? Are you getting home from work in the dark – already – with the winter blues stretching before you? And maybe finding you’re reaching for comfort food at 3pm, or when you arrive home in the dark? Well, you need to get your butt out in the sun!! Catching some rays each day: boosts your energy boosts your mood, gets you your daily… Continue reading »
A Clean Eating Challenge
This week I’m eating clean. If I’m honest, my quest for fructose free chocolate (refer to Monday’s post!) has meant that I’ve been cheating a bit lately. Rice malt syrup is still a treat, and too many treats lead to too many more. Add to my teetering sugar addiction the fact that I’m pregnant and tired, and I’ve found myself eating jam on toast for dinner a bit too often. Maybe occasionally following chips as an afternoon snack. So this week, we’re cleaning house (and body) at The Happy Eater! I think life is about being balanced. It’s much more… Continue reading »
Monday Meals – Chocolate AmazeCups
I’ve told you before about my co-dependent relationship with chocolate, and that I’m ever on the search for amazing chocolatey treats that don’t have sugar. My sister and I spent some time in the kitchen playing around with chocolate combinations and came up with this absolute winner. Seriously, try it. Take These: 1/2 c cacao butter 1/2 c raw cacao 1/4 c rice malt syrup 1/4 tsp vanilla powder 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder 1 tsp chia seeds 3/4 c shredded coconut 1/4 c goji berries 1/4 c almond flakes Do This: Put the cacao butter in a bain-marie (double… Continue reading »
Weekend Amore, Do Something You Adore!
It’s Friday! Time to let go of the week and spend some time loved up with yourself. All too often we use the weekend as an excuse to let everything slide. I’ve eaten healthily all week, I deserve dessert on Saturday night! (and maybe Friday night and Saturday lunch as well…) I’ve been going to the gym, it’s fine to sit on the couch all weekend! I get up early every morning, so what’s the problem if I drink too much and have to lay in bed till midday on Sunday recovering? Sound familiar? Trust me, I’ve been there. I’ve… Continue reading »
